What are my rights as a consumer?

The Consumer Credit Act of 1974 requires that most businesses lending money to consumers are licensed by the Director General of Fair Trading and will protect you in all your dealings with loans up to the amount of £25000. You can check whether a trader has a license or has applied for one in the past by checking the Consumer Credit Public Register.

If you feel that you have been treated unfairly or require help of any sort then the best thing you can do is contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau. Their website provides information about their services and a facility which you can use to locate your nearest office.
